Summary- Eddard Stark doesn’t want to be the king’s hand. He just wants to live his quiet humble life with his wife and children. But, the king is his friend. And the king commands it.

Not long after Eddard’s arrival he uncovers a terrible secret. A secret that leads to the death of the king and begins the fight over the iron throne.

Oh, and there are zombie like creatures. And dragons.

My rating: A

I watched the series on HBO and was well into the third season before I read this book. If you have the chance, read the book first. The show will make so much more sense. And the book will be easier to read. The show follows the book very closely so I already largely knew what was going to happen which made it a bit of a tedious read at time.

This book is well written with amazing characters. I love the Stark children (including and especially Jon Snow). I also really like “the imp” My favorite character and the character I hope wins the Game of Thrones is “Danny”.

One of the biggest differences between the book and the show is the ages of the characters. Danny is only 13 when she is given in marriage to a horse lord. Sansa is 11 when she is told she will marry once her cycles start. In the show the characters are much older out of necessity.

This book is amazing and absolutely worth the read.
